Loading... Please wait...Symptoms of mastitis include flu like symptoms: fever, aches and a painful, red and hard lump in the breast. It is very common with estimates that 1 in 5 breastfeeding women will suffer with mastitis.

What causes it?
· Blocked milk ducts
· Cracked or damaged nipples allow bacteria into the system
· It is more common in the first couple of months when both you and baby are learning what you are doing or when you start to wean, e.g. - if baby sleeps through the night
How to avoid it?
· Regular feeding patterns
· Do not compress any part of your breast with your fingers while feeding
· Check breasts regularly for lumps
· Wear a suitable bra, avoid wearing a bra at night
· Wear breast pad to absorb excessive moisture, ‘air’ your nipples
How to treat it?
· As soon as you notice a lump start treating it with warm compresses (see HOT PODS in the pain relief section) and massage.
· It is important to keep feeding the baby on the side of the lump to clear the blockage even though it will hurt. You may find manually expressing less painful.
· Antibiotics (see your doctor) may be needed if the above doesn’t help in 12-24 hours or if the symptoms are severe.
