Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Pregnancy

Carpal Tunnel normally presents as numbness, tingling and pain in one or both hands. It is caused by hormonal changes that lead to fluid retention which can cause swelling in the hands and wrists, this swelling compresses the nerves.  It usually occurs after 16 weeks and spontaneously resolves once the baby is born.

What can you do for Carpal Tunnel?

·         The best treatment for carpal tunnel is to wear resting splints (see support section to purchase the manu 3D wrist brace)  The splint keeps the wrist in neutral which prevents compression through the carpal tunnel

·         Contrast bathing (Alternate hot and cold)

·         Ice and elevation  (see pain relief section)

·         Muscle pumping exercises

·         Avoid weight bearing on outstretched hands (you could try using fingertips or fists or support your weight on your forearms)

·         Refrain from sleeping on the affected side if it is only on one side
